PassivClass Modular Classroom in London
Smallwood Primary School
Tooting, South West London
An additional early year’s school classroom module was urgently required by Wandsworth Borough Council to meet their statutory schooling obligations. The initial intention was to procure a ‘Standard’ type modular building to accommodate the class.
Cotaplan were hired for Design, QS, Planning, Procurement, Contract Management and PH consultation services.
Cotaplan won a competitive Design and Build tender to deliver this highly efficient building and the first of its type in the country in a window of only 12 weeks.
This Passiv Haus certified classroom was built using the floor, steels and beams from Cotaplan’s stock of recycled building components – reducing cost; waste and construction lead times. The building has a PAUL MVHR system which constantly refreshes the air and responds to CO2 levels in the building, providing outstanding interior air quality. The classroom also utilises ground source heating.
“Passiv Haus is a taxing requirement to achieve in any type of building. However to meet this standard using re-purposed materials in such a short lead time is remarkable.”
Construction was completed in 8 weeks and was completed for September 2014.
